Current R&D/S&T Activities

Air pollution parameter estimation - new parameters under NAAQS-2009 and method development of PAHs and BTX.

Indoor air Pollution with special reference to modern air conditioned buildings and kitchens.

Environmental studies of industries and air pollution control.

Metal balance in thermal power plants.

Environmental health due to air pollution.

Summary of research:

Carried out studies on different aspects of air pollution. Findings were published in the journals of repute. Identified Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in unleaded petrol and diesel exhaust emissions from vehicles. Studied indoor exposure to Respirable Particulate Matter and particulate phase PAHs in rural houses in North India. Studies of urban air pollution in Lucknow city over the years revealed that the respirable and total particulates levels were higher than the NAAQS limit but gaseous pollutants were within limits. Also the levels of associated metals and PAHs were significant. The air quality of the city has adverse health impacts on human health. Higher air pollution levels were recorded during winter season. PM10 in urban ambient air of Lucknow were found to be having cytotoxic and DNA damaging potential. A survey based study has concluded that the air pollution in Lucknow City has health implication on exposed vendors, drivers and traffic policemen.
